Pope Leo XIV’s first words to us as Pope were “Peace be with you.” Our hearts are open and yearning for the peace of Christ. We just have a hard time blocking out the world, the many voices screaming for whatever it is they want.

I bet we can all agree that there is much conflict and confusion in our world. No matter how far away, every war, conflict or violence affects us all.

Pope Francis said, “Each one of us is called to be an artisan of peace, by uniting and not dividing, by extinguishing hatred and not holding on to it, by opening paths of dialogue and not by constructing new walls.” Fratelli Tutti, 283

Pope Leo XIV  also encouraged us to seek peace through dialogue and building bridges.  No, we are not on the negotiating team trying to convince warring factions to cease fire in order that dialogue can take place. We are however, living in a family, or neighborhood, we have many relationships and it is there that we must begin the process of world peace!

We can practice peace, offer peace and pray for peace, both in our own hearts and in the hearts of world leaders, soldiers, all people. Where shall we begin?

Remember Jesus words, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give it to you. Do not let your hearts be troubled or afraid.” John:14:27

Jesus will help us take the necessary steps. Maybe begin with calming your own mind and seeking quiet time before God.  Look for ways to simplify your life, reduce physical and mental clutter, keep commitments in check so that you are free to be present to the people in your life.

You can educate yourself about the issues that keep conflict raging and peace away. You can teach others what you learn. We are all in this together and together, we can promote the peace we seek.

“... because of the tender mercy of our God by which the daybreak from on high will visit us to shine on those who sit in darkness and death’s shadow, to guide our feet into the way of peace.” Luke 1:78-79

This month, I hope we will all incorporate prayers for peace into our daily prayer practice.  Begin with yourself, and move on to pray for your family, neighborhoods, cities, government and world leaders. Collectively, we can send our cry to heaven for the peace our hearts desire.

Each day take every opportunity “….to rouse one another to love and good works.” Hebrews 10:24

Peace and blessings,
