LENTEN SNAPSHOT #3

Last month, Sister Grace Amarachi Ezeonu, SNDdeN, the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) Representative at the United Nations, attended this year’s virtual 59th Session of the UN Commission for Social Development.  The major theme of this year’s session was the role of digital technologies in promoting sustainable development and the well-being of all.

One of the greatest challenges for societies today is the need to address the digital divide. Digital technologies help bridge the gaps and make possible a more inclusive, people-centered society focused on “leaving no one behind,” especially the marginalized.  This is the central commitment of the 2030 Global Agenda for Sustainable Development.

As part of the 59th session, the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur co-sponsored a virtual side event called Servicing Across the Digital Divide: Catholic Religious Witness to the Role of Digital Technology in Social Inequalities. Sister Lorraine Connell, General Treasurer of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur, presented the Sisters’ African Photovoltaic/Clean Water Project as one effort to address the digital divide. Sister Lorraine’s presentation can be found at time segment 3:45 – 18:40 in this UN NGO video.
