The Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur have a deep connection with Haiti — from Sister Jeanette Pierre-Louis, a native Haitian, who founded the Notre Dame Education Center in La Savane to Sister Catherine 'Sissy' Corr who established the Notre Dame Bakery (Boulangerie) in Les Cayes 3 km down the road.
On Saturday, August 14, Haiti experienced a devastating 7.2-magnitude earthquake with the epicenter near Les Cayes. The community of 100,000 residents was severely impacted. The Notre Dame Boulangerie in Les Cayes is home to 18 employees and 50 individuals who sell the bread in their neighborhoods. The bakery was impacted and needs crucial structural repair so that our employees can go back to making bread that is desperately needed.
The Notre Dame Boulangerie provides scholarships for children of its bakers and bread sellers.
We are grateful that our bakers and our bread distributors are accounted for. However, they need to recover their homes. Access to food and clean water is critical. We are asking you to help us in this emergency through a donation channel specifically for our ministry in Les Cayes, Haiti.
