Live the Good Volunteer, Kim Keck, has fond memories of her Aunt Mary Ellen Rott, a Sister of Notre Dame de Namur who faithfully served and educated countless students for 68 years.
These memories led Kim back to the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur grounds where, years ago, she enjoyed annual family days and the opportunity to picnic with her aunt, other Sisters, and their families. This fun-filled day of games and laughter was a summer favorite.
In June, Kim, along with her husband and two children, returned to SNDdeN to participate in Live the Good Volunteer Opportunity. Sr. Carol Lichtenberg started our time together with prayer before Sisters and volunteers set about various tasks such as weeding, cleaning statues, and clearing honeysuckle.

As Kim struck up a conversation with Sr. Betty Ann Zengel, the two discovered they shared good memories of Sr. Mary Ellen. An unenthusiastic learner, Betty Ann stubbornly started first grade with resistance. It was no match for her teacher, Sr. Mary Ellen. Over the course of the year, she unleashed a love of learning and of the Sisters in little Betty Ann who went on to become a Sister of Notre Dame de Namur, joyfully bringing the message of our good God through service to others.
Sr. Mary Ellen retired to the Health Center, bringing her experience as an archivist and her love of our heritage. She worked in the archives while staying actively engaged as a teacher, tutor, and medical driver.
Since her aunt’s death in 2000, Kim has kept the large wooden rosary that Sr. Mary Ellen wore with her habit for nearly 70 years as a symbol of her vocation and the dedication of her life as a Sister of Notre Dame de Namur. In June, Kim donated this cross to the archives, continuing to document history as her aunt loved to do.
As with every Live the Good Opportunity, our day together ended with a discussion and reflection led by Sr. Florence Maier. Families lingered and new friendships were formed.
