HOW DO I KNOW I AM CALLED?

How does a person know
if she has a vocation to religious life?

Listen to the ways God speaks — not in a voice "out loud," but in the inner reaches of your mind and heart.

Do you experience a deep yearning
to make God the center of your life?

Listen to the voices of those around you.

Do others see qualities in you that indicate a call to be about the work of building God’s kingdom here on Earth?

Listen to your heart as you explore.

Is something deep inside
inviting you to something more?

The process of listening to God, to the voices of others and to your own heart is called discernment. Discernment is a process of reflection, prayer, conversation and openness. Discernment takes time and energy. But it is through this process that we discover who we are and where God wants us to be.

Who Will Help Me?

It always helps to talk with someone. Sister Kim Dalgarn will be happy to talk with you by phone, respond to your e-mail questions or meet with you. They have many resources available — books, magazine articles and videos — to help you with the discernment process. We also have details on Come and See Discernment Days and Retreats and our Service in the City Volunteer Program.

Discerning about religious life is a process of prayer, reflection, conversation and listening. As you think about your call to religious life, we invite you to dialogue with us about our way of living and your desire to respond to God’s invitation in your life. When you feel ready, we can help you enter a formal discernment process.
