Sisters of Notre Dame began teaching in Washington 1873 when they opened an industrial school in the district. Later, they would eventually teach at St. Aloysius Parish School, St. Martin Parish School, St. Stephen Parish School, St. Francis Xavier Parish School, Holy Spirit School and the Lt. Joseph P. Kennedy, Jr., Institute. Sisters of Notre Dame also established the Academy of Notre Dame and Trinity College, which is now Trinity Washington University.
