Reflections of the Day
February 20, 2017
“To whom has wisdom’s roots been revealed?”
The dictionary defines wisdom as “Good sense, learned from experience.” How very true.
Lord God, open to us the wisdom hidden in the nooks and crannies of daily living. It is there that true wisdom lingers, waiting to be discovered.
February 19, 2017
The Lord said to Moses, “Speak to the whole Israelite community and them to be holy.”
What a simple directive, “be holy”. One well worth pondering.
Lord God, how best does one go about being holy? Perhaps it is all about loving – loving you and loving one another.
February 18, 2017
Jesus took Peter, James and John apart and he was transformed before them. A voice spoke saying, “This is my beloved Son, listen to him.”
Such a profound, intimate moment, the Transfiguration. The Father acknowledging his beloved Son and asking us to listen to him.
Lord God, Father of us all, it is your heart’s desire that we love your Son and listen to his words.
February 17, 2017
“I call you my friends says the Lord, for I have made known to you all that the Father has told me.”
What an amazing reality, Jesus sharing with us all that the Father has shared with him.
Lord God, help me to be better at listening, listening to you, the word made flesh, who chose to make your dwelling place among us.
February 16, 2017
Along the way, Jesus turned to his disciples and asked, “Who do you say that I am?” Peter answered “You are the Christ.”
How brave of Peter to answer so quickly. I wonder what I would have answered had I been there.
Lord God, you wanted your disciples to know you by name because name is an intimate part of a relationship like the Shepherd and his sheep.
February 15, 2017
“Grant that we may be so fashioned by your grace as to become a dwelling pleasing to you.”
This Collect is reminiscent of Jeremiah’s call to go down to the Potter’s house to see how the clay was shaped by the Potter’s hands. (Jeremiah 18)
Lord God, Master Potter, it is you who lift up life from the clay and fashion it into living, breathing, human beings. “Amazing grace, how sweet thou art.”
February 14, 2017
“The Lord will bless his people with peace.”
Such a simple statement, yet one that flies in the face of the chaos apparent in our world today. Yet, no matter how long the night, the dawn will surely follow.
Draw near to your people, O Lord and hear our prayer, as we hunger and thirst for the presence of peace in our world.
February 13, 2017
“The Pharisees began to argue with Jesus, seeking to test him and Jesus sighed from the depth of his spirit.”
“Jesus sighed from the depths of his spirit.” One’s heart hurts for the endless frustration encountered by Jesus. Truly, he came, and there was no room…
Lord God, be with us when days are dark and we are weary to our very depths. Be our rock and our refuge, our light and our love.
February 12, 2017
“Eye has not seen, ear has not heard or has it entered the human heart what God has prepared for those who love him.”
Paul is doing his very best to convince us that our God cannot possibly be outdone when it comes to loving his children.
Lord God, can it really be that your love for us is beyond our wildest dreams? “Amazing grace, how sweet thou art…”
February 11, 2017
Great crowds were following Jesus in the wilderness, and he was concerned for them. He asked his disciples, “How many loaves do you have?” and blessing their 7, he fed thousands.
Regardless of how little we have to offer at times, the Lord can always find a way to multiply it beyond our wildest dreams.
Lord God, you are always mindful of our needs, and from time to time, you ask us to be mindful of the needs of others regardless of how little we have.
February 10, 2017
The people brought a deaf mute to Jesus. Jesus moved him aside from the crowd and touched his tongue and his ears saying, “Be opened” and they were.
Once again Jesus shares his power through the gift of touch. His intimate tenderness is available to all who ask.
Lord God, your Son, word made flesh, made of himself our daily bread. May he hold us and heal us all the days of our lives.
February 09, 2017
“Humbly welcome the word that has been planted in you.”
Much of life is about discovering and nurturing the gifts that God has given to us and how to go about sharing them with others.
Lord God, how wondrous that you choose to plant the seeds of your words in the furrows of my life. May I tend them wisely and yield a hundred fold.
February 08, 2017
“Your word, O Lord, is truth; consecrate us in the truth.”
When Jesus told Pilate that he had come to testify to the truth, Pilate replied, “What is truth?” A timely question for today’s world.
Lord, these days it seems as if so many have lost their moral compass. Give us your love for the truth and hold us steadfast to your word.
February 07, 2017
The Pharisees and scribes questioned Jesus “why do your disciples not follow the traditions?” Jesus answered, “you hypocrites, you nullify the word of God in favor of tradition.”
Often, it would seem that it is much easier to live by a “check list”, then it is to be sensitive to the needs of others swirling around us in our daily lives.
Lord, “tradition” can be like a millstone weighing down the spirit’s flight within us. Set us free, Lord to live by love, rather than by law.
February 06, 2017
Wherever Jesus went, “… they laid the sick in the market places and begged him that they might touch him and those who did, were healed.”
Touch – such an all embracing universal language.
Lord God, you became flesh that you might touch and be touched. Share with us this gift and grace that we might be a healing presence in the “market places” of our world.
February 05, 2017
“Thus says the Lord: Share your bread, shelter the oppressed, and clothe the naked. Then your light shall break forth like the dawn.”
From the beginning of ancient history, it would seem that our relationship with our God, is intricately entwined with our relationship with one another.
Lord God, when you “knit” us in our Mother’s womb, you also wove us into a family tapestry. You call us children, and we call you Father.
February 04, 2017
“My sheep hear my voice.”
As I walked the pastures with my Grandfather as a child, the sheep always responded to his voice and followed him wherever he walked. It was such a gentle, loving relationship.
Lord God, Good Shepherd of us all, tune my heart to the sound of your voice, that I might always hear you and follow you, all the days of my life.
February 03, 2017
“Do not neglect hospitality, for through it, some have unknowingly entertained angels.”
Hospitality – providing a comfortable place to be; a welcoming presence.
Lord God, you come seeking a dwelling place among us. Now, you ask us to provide one for others, be it a welcoming presence, a random act of kindness or a warm smile in passing…
February 02, 2017
“Mary and Joseph took Jesus up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord. They were amazed at what was said about him.”
Presentation – revealing what is deep and dear. A child, the infant Christ is lifted up, along with all the others.
Lord God, how you melt and mold your presence into the “every dayness” of our lives. “Amazing grace, how sweet thou art…”
February 01, 2017
“Brothers and Sisters, strengthen your drooping hands and your weak knees. Strive for peace.”
We all have experienced those feelings of “drooping hands and weak knees.” At such times, peace feels so very far away.
Lord God, on those days when everything seems darker and more difficult, “Be thou our vision …” and lead us to your light and to your love.
