Reflections of the Day

Jesus (Matthew 7)

June 27, 2017

Jesus said, “How narrow the gate that leads to life. And those who find it are few.”

Reflection:
While Jesus was speaking, perhaps he had in mind the sheep gate, with its narrow entrance, to provide safety for the shepherd’s flock.

Prayer:
Lord God, like sheep, we must adjust ourselves to the narrow gate if we are to be among those few who are to find “life.”

(Genesis 12)

June 26, 2017

The Lord said to Abram, “Go forth from the land of your kinfolk, to a land that I shall show you.”

Reflection:
As with Abram, so too, with us. God calls us to let go and “go forth” into lands that are new.

Prayer:
Lord God, it is so easy to “settle in,” and disregard your call to “go out into the deep.” Give us the courage to welcome the challenges that you set before us.

Jesus (Matthew 10)

June 25, 2017

“Are not two sparrows sold for a small coin, yet not one falls without your Father knowing it. So, do not be afraid. You are worth more than many sparrows."

Reflection:
If the Father is mindful of the sparrows’ well being, we may be assured that he will keep an eye on us.

Prayer:
Lord God, how often we hurry our way through life with little or not thought of your care and concern for us.

Isaiah reminds us that we are all gifted and confirmed in the fire and in the light of the Holy Spirit’s presence.

Prayer:
(Pentecost Sequence)
“Light Immortal, Light Divine, visit thou these hearts of thine, and our inmost being fill.”

Moses spoke to the people, “You are a people sacred to the Lord. He has chosen you and he has set his heart on you.”

What wondrous words! Imagine, being sacred to the Lord who has set his heart upon you.

Prayer:
Lord God, from generations to generations you have loved us with an everlasting love. Help us to truly dwell in the reality of this remarkable mystery.

Jesus (Matthew 6)

June 22, 2017

When Jesus taught his disciples to pray, he told them to be simple. One thing he told them to do was ask their Father for “. . . daily bread.”

Reflection:
Jesus longed for his disciples to taste the Father’s love for themselves and to know that they too, were his children.

Prayer:
Lord God, Father of us all, help us not to worry ourselves with tomorrow’s concerns, but to trust that you will always provide for our daily needs with your “daily bread.”

David (Psalm 24)

June 21, 2017

“The clean of heart will climb the mountain of the Lord.”

Reflection:
Following the Lord entails a good bit of “mountain climbing.” Striving for a clean heart is not for the faint of heart.

Prayer:
Lord God, life beckons us to search for meaning and purpose. Neither are possible without your presence.

Jesus (Matthew 5)

June 20, 2017

“But I say to you, be perfect.”

Reflection:
Often, our perception of “perfect” is akin to not having any faults or failings. The dictionary (and Jesus) say, “Doing one’s best.”

Prayer:
Lord God, how different your children are. And so, our “best” will be different as well. And each moment of each new day presents opportunities for new wisdom.

Paul (2 Corinthians)

June 16, 2017

“We hold this treasure in earthen vessels that the power may be of God and not from us.”

Reflection:
Our bodies are indeed earthen vessels subject to the fragile texture of the clay from which we are formed.

Prayer:
Lord God, only you would have ever thought of placing such priceless treasures in such unlikely containers. Let your merciful love fill us and overflow beyond us, all the days of our life.

Paul (2 Corinthians)

June 15, 2017

“All of us, gazing on the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the Lord.”

Reflection:
“. . . gazing on the glory of the Lord . . .” the poets tell us that this glory can be found in “ten thousand place ” which means everywhere.

Prayer:
Lord God, “gazing” upon you intuits being swept up and transformed into your beautiful self. And, love does such things.
