Reflections of the Day
March 26, 2017
The Lord sent Samuel to Jesse’s house to choose his King from among Jesse’s sons. All were present except the youngest and Samuel sent for him. When David arrived, Samuel said, “There – anoint him!”
When Samuel anointed David King, “the spirit of the Lord rushed upon him from that day on.”
Lord God, David was a young shepherd boy. Your Mother, Mary, was a young handmaid and your Son was the village carpenter. Your love for simple folks is a blessing upon us all.
March 25, 2017
When the angel Gabriel appeared to Mary, “she was greatly troubled.” After Gabriel answered her questions, she replied, “Let it be done…”
Mary is the ideal role model for us all. She listened, she asked questions and she said “yes…”
Lord God, once again you take notice of the young Mary, young handmaid that she was, entrusted herself completely into your loving care.
March 24, 2017
“To love God with all your heart, and your neighbor as yourself is worth more than any sacrifice.”
What an amazing statement! One cannot help but wonder about all those sacrifices we made, to replace “loving”.
Lord God, how long and insistent you have been, trying to persuade us that loving you and one another supercedes any sacrifice or gift that we could possibly think of to offer you.
March 23, 2017
In utter frustration the Lord spoke to his people. “This is the nation that does not listen to the voice of their Lord… Faithfulness has disappeared...”
hese words of Jeremiah were written over 600 years B.C. They are reminiscent of the transfiguration of Jesus when the Father said, “This is my beloved Son, listen to him.”
Lord God, here we are today, and from the looks of things, we still are not doing very well at listening.
March 22, 2017
Moses spoke to the people “… hear the decrees I am teaching you, that you may live.”
Time and time again, Moses reminds Israel that the closeness of their God, has no parallel in all of biblical history
Lord God, your love for us is beyond anything that we could ever imagine. And yet, we so often forget your presence among us. I wonder why?
March 21, 2017
Azariah stood up in the fire and prayed aloud “Deliver us by your wonders, O Lord.”
Azariah was a friend of Daniel’s, who was cast into the fiery furnace. His faith in his God saved him from death.
Lord God, what an amazing man your Azariah. How he endured such sufferings to remain steadfast in your love. Grace me with his fierce, tenacious love for you.
March 20, 2017
An angel said to Joseph, “Do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife. It is through the Holy Spirit that this child has been conceived”, and so he did.
And, how simple it all seems, but we know better. Both Mary and Joseph consented to requests steeped in mystery, because they trusted in their God.
Lord God, who indeed is this man, Joseph? We have no words to recall, but only his actions. Joseph was simply just there, present to whatever the Lord asked of him.
March 19, 2017
The people grumbled against Moses asking “Why did we ever leave Egypt? Is the Lord in our midst or not?”
It is heartening to know that the Israelites also struggled with remaining faithful to their God.
Lord God, following you can be difficult at times. It is then that we learn and depend upon the love and hope that has been poured upon us by your Holy Spirit.
March 18, 2017
“Who is there like you, God who removes the guilt, pardons sin and delights in mercy?”
When the Lord walked among us, he made it very clear that his primary “delight” was to seek out sinners and those in need.
Lord God, only you would take “delight” in removing the guilt of your children. You proclaimed, “This is why I have come.” No wonder Micah asks, “who is there, like our God?”
March 17, 2017
Joseph was the youngest and favored Son of Jacob (Israel). His brothers were jealous and said to one another, “Here comes that dreamer, let us kill him…”
It would seem that from the beginning, those called, gifted and blessed by the Lord, are often harassed, persecuted and even put to death.
Lord God, what is it that sometimes prevents us from welcoming those among us, who are harbingers of your wisdom and your grace.
March 16, 2017
“Abide with your servants, O Lord, who implore the help of your grace, that they may receive support, guidance and protection.”
Abide – a word filled with beauty and depths, but seldom used these days. Abide – everlasting presence…
Lord God, you send to your disciples, “abide in me”, and we ask you to abide in us. How wondrous, that we desire an everlasting dwelling place deep within one another.
March 15, 2017
“I hear the whispers of the crowd that frightens me from every side, but my trust in you, O Lord, you are my God.”
Jesus is beginning to prepare himself and his disciples for what lies ahead, most especially for his passion and death.
Lord God, help us to be a faithful companion as you face the cruel rejection that will send you to your death. Show us how to be compassionate and comforting, as we walk with you, by your side.
March 14, 2017
“Come now, let us set things right, says the Lord. Though your sins be like scarlet, they will become white as snow.”
Ours is a God of boundless compassion and care, ever ready to forgive and forget the mistakes of his children.
Lord God, our hearts can scarcely comprehend the height and depth of your loving forgiveness. You are always willing to “set things right”.
March 13, 2017
“Give, and gifts will be given to you; packed together, shaken down and overflowing will be poured into your lap.”
Imagine receiving a gift matching this description! The Lord’s generosity is indeed unparalleled.
Lord God, we know that all that we have and all that we are is pure gift. May we in turn, be pure gift to others.
March 12, 2017
“Beloved, bear your share of hardship for the gospel, with the strength that comes from God.”
Another translation of gospel is “truth”. And Timothy is asking us to share in the hardships of being faithful to the truth.
Lord God, we know what witnessing to the truth cost you. And we know that, “with the strength that comes from you”, we are also able to follow in your footsteps.
March 11, 2017
Moses spoke to the people saying, “Today the Lord is making this agreement with you. You will be a people sacred to the Lord…”
What an amazing grace, to be identified as “a people sacred to the Lord.”
Lord God, could it be that from our very beginning when you “knit us in our Mother’s womb” you had claimed us as your very own.
March 10, 2017
“My soul waits for the Lord, more than watchmen wait for the dawn. Let Israel wait for the Lord.”
In this digital age of ours, most of us are not very good at waiting. The faster, the better. Lord, slow us down.
Lord God, you have promised to be with us always, yet while we wait for you, you are already dwelling within us. Help us how to navigate the mystery of your presence.
March 09, 2017
Queen Esther, seized with mortal anguish, prayed “God of Abraham, I have no help but you. Turn our mourning into gladness and our sorrow into wholeness.”
What a beautiful prayer that we all could share with Esther.
Lord God, such a strong, faithful friend, your Esther. She risked her life to protect the lives of others. Grace us with her fierce, steadfast courage.
March 08, 2017
“Remember you compassion and your merciful love, O Lord, redeem us from all our distress.”
Jesus has told us, “Do not worry, your heavenly Father will provide for you.” Let us take him at his word. (Matthew 6)
Come, Lord Jesus and show us the path to peace. Let us feel the healing calm of your merciful presence.
March 07, 2017
“I sought the Lord and he answered me, and delivered me from all my fears.”
Ours is an anxious, fearful, world these days. Unrest and uncertainty swirl around us as we hunger and thirst for peace.
Lord God, peace was your farewell gift to us. May it at all times go before us and follow after.
