Reflections of the Day
April 27, 2017
“Many are the troubles of the just but out of them all, the Lord delivers.”
It would seem that following the Lord would always lead to a life of peace and harmony. The life of Jesus, however, would suggest otherwise.
Lord God, it is your heart’s desire that we become children of the Light, yet you yourself tasted the dark side of life. Give us courage to follow in your footsteps.
April 26, 2017
The light came into the world but the people preferred the darkness.
What a stark, bold statement. One cannot help but ask, “How can this be?” But we know that it is.
Lord God, you have proclaimed yourself “Light of the world,” and we believe and witness to the truth, that no darkness will ever overcome this light.
April 25, 2017
“Beloved, cast all your worries up on the Lord, because he cares for you.”
One can imagine Peter casting his cares upon the Lord, with his fisherman’s precision, casting his nets upon the sea.
Lord God, Peter would know all about casting cares upon you and tasting the sustaining forgiveness of your merciful love.
April 24, 2017
“As they prayed, the place where they gathered shook and they were filled with the Holy Spirit.
As Peter and John prayed with the disciples, the power and the presence of the Spirit was made visible among them all.
Spirit God, what amazing faith and love possessed these early Christians. And, even to this day, your Spirit still blows where she wills and set our hearts afire.
April 23, 2017
“Although you have not seen him, you love him. Even though you do not see him now, you believe in him.”
Peter affirms the early Christians who are faithful to a God that they have never seen. We also know how hard that can be at times.
Lord God, faith and love are the bed rock of our covenant with you. We believe in you and we trust in your sustaining love for us.
April 22, 2017
“My strength and my courage is the Lord.”
Sometimes when we are confronted with the hard realities of life, we forget to rely upon the Lord’s strength and courage rather than our own.
Lord God, you were sent to show us the way. You have told us that you are the way. Help us to be forever mindful of your sustaining presence among us.
April 21, 2017
Jesus revealed himself to the disciples while they were fishing, “Children, have you caught anything?” he called. They said, “It is the Lord.”
What a delight – Jesus, just showing up on the shore preparing breakfast for his disciples!
Lord Jesus, I sometimes wonder just how many times I have completely missed you just showing up in my life.
April 20, 2017
“You are the children of the prophets.”
What a remarkable heritage ours, related to such Biblical luminaries as Moses, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Esther, as well as countless others.
Lord God, wake us up! Remind us of who we are and the gifts and responsibilities we have inherited. Like them, fill us with your Spirit-fire.
April 19, 2017
A cripple was sitting by the temple gate asking for alms. Peter said, “Look at us. I have no silver or gold but what I do have, I give you, arise and walk.”
How wonderful! Peter shares his most treasured possession with this man: his faith in God’s healing, merciful love.
Lord God, we often measure our wealth by the things we possess and accumulate. Peter knew for certain where his treasures resided.
April 18, 2017
“If you have risen with Christ, seek the things that are above.”
How often during the day do we allow ourselves to get all tangled up in things that are not from above – such a waste of precious time.
How often we have read, “Be still and know that I am God.” Create in me, O Lord, a quiet and caring heart.
April 17, 2017
Joseph was the youngest and favored Son of Jacob (Israel). His brothers were jealous and said to one another, “Here comes that dreamer, let us kill him…”
After the Resurrection, the disciples were never quite sure where Jesus might show up. May we be aware of the “. . . ten thousand places” that he might be.
Loving One, you have assured us that you are “still with us. . . .” I wonder how often I have unknowingly passed you by?
April 16, 2017
“I have risen and am with you still.”
“I have risen . . .” These are the words that make all the difference. Our God still lives.
Holy One, you have overcome death and dying once and for all. You are the Light that overcomes all darkness, the Resurrection that transforms every crucifixion.
April 15, 2017
“O truly blessed night, when things of heaven are wed to those of earth and the divine to the human.”
This is the night that the Church sings aloud, praising the wonder of wonders – that heaven and earth have become one and our God walks with us as one of us.
Lord God, like the loving Father that you are, you lift your children to heights beyond their wildest dreams yet all the while dwelling among them as food for the journey.
April 14, 2017
“Oppressed and condemned, he was taken away and who would have thought any more of his destiny?”
Who would have ever guessed that what looked like the end for Jesus was indeed just the beginning?
Lord God, your ways are steeped in mystery and those who follow after you, are called to live a life of utter dependence upon your word.
April 13, 2017
On the night before he was handed over, Jesus took bread and said, “This is my body. Do this in memory of me.”
Soon, Jesus will be lifted up on the cross and given as bread for the world.
Lord God, to the very last of your days, you are mindful of your children, leaving for them a memento of your everlasting, ever present love for them.
April 12, 2017
“Insults have broken my heart and I am weak. I looked for sympathy but there was none.”
These heavy, sorrowful words could well have been upon the lips of Jesus as he began his journey into the dark night of the cross.
How can this be Lord, God, your heart broken by insults and rejection and no one offers you sympathy and compassion? How can this be . . . ?”
April 11, 2017
Reclining at table with his disciples, Jesus was deeply troubled and said, “One of you will betray me.”
Such a sacred time, sharing a meal and Jesus chose just such a time to announce the one who would betray him.
Lord God, one could scarcely comprehend Jesus being rejected by the chief priests but who would have ever considered a trusted friend.
April 10, 2017
“The Lord is my light, whom should I fear? The Lord is my life’s refuge, of whom should I be afraid . . .”
Jesus could very well have recited these words of David as he braced himself for the dark days closing in upon him.
Lord Jesus, we seldom think of you as one overwhelmed and in need. Your passion was a long, lonely road. Let me be light for you in these times of darkness.
April 09, 2017
As Jesus entered Jerusalem “the crowds kept crying out, blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord . . .”
We would do well to remember that several days later these very same voices will be shouting “crucify him.”
Lord God, how can this be? How can you continue to lift us up time after time knowing how unfaithful we can be?
April 08, 2017
The Pharisees said, “What are we going to do? If we leave him alone, all will believe in him.” So they planned to kill Jesus.
Instead of being perceived as the long awaited Messiah by the church authorities, Jesus was considered a threat to be illuminated.
Lord God, how sad that the precious gift of your Son was rejected by those very ones who should have welcomed him with open arms.
