Corryville Catholic is an elementary inner city school near the University of Cincinnati. The students come from 6 different Catholic parishes. We emphasize working together as a caring community and strive to help the students to be proud and do their best. Some NDA members serve as teacher assistants for grades 5-8 and tutor students individually and in small groups. They also work with the principal to alleviate attendance problems, supervise the cafeteria, and the help with after school activities. Other NDA members assist with first and second grade in classrooms, help students with computer work, tutor individuals, and supervise recess, lunch, and field trips. The member who assists with the Pre-school Room will perform similar duties and also read stories to groups of children, assist with correcting papers, and supervise the After School Program.

The Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur are grateful to our partner, The Charles H. Dater Foundation, which generously sponsors AmeriCorps volunteers at the Corryville Catholic Elementary School site.

The Women's Connection is a neighborhood center in a Price Hill where women and girls suffer from the effects of poverty and crime. The center provides support for change by offering information, referrals, free access to technology, and an empowerment path for both women and girls who live in the neighborhood. AmeriCorps staff placed at The Women's Connection will work directly with women who come into the center to participate in our empowerment programs. 2011 marks the beginning of a new program which brings accountability and commitment to the empowerment process. Volunteers will work as a part of a cohesive team in the design, implementation, and follow up of programs, provide 1-on-1 support to women working on their unique goals, and supervise our new empowerment lab. Volunteers need to be: flexible, resourceful, patient, accepting team players. Must be cognizant of the individual learning styles and gifts that each woman brings.

"I've received so much back and learned so much about myself and what I'm capable of doing that volunteering doesn't feel like a sacrifice."
